There are many popular Soap Operas but there a much more that have not attracted audiences and broke through to prime time. Success is based on the right formula to the soap and most of the big name soaps have the same conventions. For example they all are continuous dramas that are played each week featuring 4 or 5 storylines an episode interlinking characters with relationships and family affairs. The stories are always open ended and never come to a complete conclusion due to another story line sparking from the close of the other. Some characters do however have down time where there stories are not as dramatic due to the scene being set for the future. The cast is very large and is always changing with characters always dying off or leaving and being replaced by new fresh families or old relations returning. The "return" of a character is very popular in Eastenders for example Janine Butcher has exited and re entered many times. The characters in British soaps are normally your typical working class in comparison to American soaps who portray glamorous well off figures that you aspire to rather than relate to. They are normally set in a small area for example Eastenders is set in a borough of London called Walford and Emmerdale is set in a village called Emmerdale in West Yorkshire. Another typical convention are special episodes that can either be an hour long to pack full of action on a special occasion for example a Christmas episode. Hollyoaks are a big fan of the special episodes with a series of late night shows most commonly called Hollyoaks Later but there are some other variations. This way they can show more gruesome deaths or sordid affairs.
